They took responsibility for 25 acres—and helped build a 60-acre farming operation.
There was a time when only seven acres of the family’s 25 acres were under cultivation. Today, the family’s farming operation has expanded to 60 acres and generated around ₹90 lakh in income last year. Behind this transformation are the responsibility, decisions and trust that Pushpa and Jayashri Apsunde took upon themselves.
When they accepted responsibility for 25 acres, their role was not limited to farm work. They also had to contribute to farm planning and help maintain the family’s financial stability. Initially, only seven acres were cultivated while the remaining land lay unused. Gradually, the family worked to bring the land under cultivation.
At the same time, the men in the family were occupied with a hotel, an agricultural centre and an earthmover business. As a result, the day-to-day responsibility of farming increasingly came to Pushpa and Jayashri. They did not simply supervise the work—they stepped into the field and learned it themselves.
They became involved in crop planning, labour management, work allocation and planning activities from cultivation to harvesting. They also trained workers and gradually took charge of key farming responsibilities.
Today, around 40 workers operate under their guidance. They personally plan what work needs to be done, how much labour is required and how tasks can be completed on time. In the process, their decision-making ability and leadership skills have grown significantly.
Once they primarily saw themselves as homemakers. Today, Pushpa and Jayashri actively participate in important decisions related to the family farm—how much land should be cultivated, how labour should be organised and how farm operations should be completed efficiently.
The results are visible. From taking responsibility for 25 acres, with only seven acres initially under cultivation, the family’s farming operation has grown to 60 acres. Last year, it generated around ₹90 lakh.
Their journey also included a difficult family crisis when Pushpa’s husband met with a serious accident. The entire family stood together during that challenging period, and with timely treatment and family support, he survived.
That experience made Pushpa realise even more deeply the strength of family unity. The same unity continues to help the family balance farming, business and education.
The journey of Pushpa and Jayashri is not simply the story of expanding farmland from 25 to 60 acres. It is the story of how responsibility can build decision-making ability and leadership in women. Their family trusted them, and they turned that trust into results.
